10 Thoughts on Episode 1 of Insecure

10 Thoughts on Episode 1 of Insecure

Episode one of the new season of Insecure has set the bar way high. Insecure premiered last Sunday and was filled with die-hard-laughter, heavy eye rolling and lots of ass (thanks HBO.) As a huge fan of Insecure I plan on reaping each episode this season with my 10 thoughts. What were yours?

1. Dating in 2017 Sucks

Dating apps are supposed to be a plus (easy access to a rebound) but for Issa, it's not happening, at all. I rolled my eyes with her as each guy asked the same basic questions. What is this, a job interview? The most frustrating question had to be "How are you still single?" Issa's shirt was my exact thought throughout her dating montage.

2. Black Girls Need Therapy Too

I loved the awkwardness of Molly's therapy session. Black women are not supposed to need therapy (insert sarcasm), we are strong and without weakness. Watching her discomfort showed me the result of that theory. How could we properly get help if we are so convinced that we are just fine without it. I actually look forward to seeing Molly's progression with her therapist. Hopefully, it will encourage more women of color to seek help if needed.

3. Where is This Going Lawerence?

I'll start by saying I am #TeamIssa but Tasha doesn't deserve this. She is an innocent bystander in Issa's and Lawerence's mess. If Chad didn't call out Lawerence for displaying F**k Boy qualities would he have taken Tasha out on that date? Tasha has done nothing wrong, she was feeling Lawrence even with the Best Buy polo shirt. I have a feeling she's about to be collateral damage in this game of love.

4. The Music Tho!

The soundtrack for this episode was so on point. I was dancing in my seat the entire episode. From Cardi B to Jazmine Sullivan, every song was immediately added onto my Spotify playlist. I almost forgot how much I loved Ice Cube's You Can Do It (Save The Last Dance taught me.

5. The Public School System Needs Help

Can we blame the We Got Ya'll team for wanting to call it quits? How can we help a school whose administration doesn't give a damn what happens to its students. I hope in the following episodes there's a student that offers a glimmer of hope.

6. Workplace BS

I rolled my eyes so hard at the homeboy who does the bare minimum and still gets paid far more. I hope we get to see Molly confront the issue and maybe learn a thing or two because inequality in the workplace is real.

7. I'm Doing Just Fine Without You

We sometimes do the absolute most to ensure that our ex's believe we are living it up without them (don't lie ladies...and men.) Watching Issa put together a party for this sole purpose was purely entertaining. Nothing good comes from pretending. Nothing.

8. Planned Conversations

Issa is what my inner dialogue sounds like. Her conversations with herself was amazing. She went from seduction to straight up pretending she already had a bae waiting in the hot tub. Rae was brilliant in this scene and I think tons of women could relate.

9. This Party is Outta Hand

By far the most entertaining scene in the entire episode. When you mix Rossi, weed and gang bangers, you get a kitchen fire. I don't know how they'll top this. I laughed so hard my stomach was in knots. Once the Bloods "bonnected" Problem's Betta Watch Yo Self, the party got started. Issa's dry humor was perfectly placed and showcased her awkwardness perfectly. Can we please get more scenes with Thug Yoda? He was hilarious. I look forward to having kids one day so I can say" Bitch, I got kids too. Turn up."

10. Lawerence, Stop Playing with my Feelings!

Can we please talk about that last scene? Lawerence! What the hell was that? I jumped with joy when he passionately kissed Issa but was left feeling used when it turned into a drive thru. Issa might need to borrow Molly's "super human n***a repellant," cause homegirl is about to get her feelings hurt.
